A younger son asked his father for his share of the inheritance and left for a distant country. There he wasted everything. When famine came, he was left with nothing and ended up tending pigs.
He decided to return home and ask to be taken on as a worker. But while he was still far away, his father saw him, ran to him, and embraced and kissed him. The father gave him a robe, a ring, and sandals, and prepared a feast.
The older son was angry and would not go in. The father went out to him too and reminded him that everything he had was his son’s as well. But now they should rejoice: the brother who had been as good as dead was alive again, and the lost one had been found.
