In the days of the judges, there was a famine in the land. Naomi left Beit Lechem for Moav with her husband Elimelech and their two sons. Elimelech died, and later both sons died too. Naomi was left with her daughters-in-law, Ruth and Orpah.
When she heard there was bread again in Yehudah, she set out for home. She asked her daughters-in-law to return to their families and blessed them. They wept together. Orpah said goodbye, but Ruth stayed. She said she would go with Naomi, that Naomi’s people would be her people, and Naomi’s God her God.
The two arrived in Beit Lechem at the beginning of the barley harvest. Naomi told the women not to call her Naomi but Mara, because life had become very bitter for her. She said she had gone away full and returned empty. Ruth was with her.
