The covenant is not far away
“Suddenly the Lord whom you seek will come to His temple, and the messenger of the covenant whom you desire. Look, He is coming, says the LORD of hosts.”

On Shabbat Shuvah, amid preparations and prayers, we can pause and ask: Whom are we seeking? Malachi speaks to people waiting for the LORD and describes the Lord coming to His temple. Yet that nearness also refines. It brings to light things we may find uncomfortable to see.
The prophet pictures a silversmith refining silver. The image invites us to consider a cleansing that reaches within, a patient work with a purpose. Who is the messenger of the covenant, and what will happen when he comes? We can stay with the question, read, and ask for an open heart. As we await the Messiah and restoration, we can ask even now that meeting the LORD would make us more honest and compassionate, including where change asks us to release something familiar.
A simple prayer
LORD, You are the One we seek. Draw us near and cleanse our hearts. Help us recognize Your faithfulness to the covenant and respond truthfully.

The messenger of the covenant and His presence
Malachi 3:1–4 brings together the awaited coming of the Lord and the refining of the sons of Levi. In Isaiah 63:7–9, we encounter the LORD’s lovingkindness and the “angel of His presence,” who saves in love and compassion. Read the passages alongside each other and ask what His nearness looks like. What does each reveal about the LORD’s love and how He draws near to His people?
