Making room for His voice
“For He is our God, and we are the people of His pasture, the flock in His care. Today, if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts…”

Some words are so familiar that we know them by heart, yet one day they meet us differently. Amid the sounds of the holiday, conversations, and thoughts about the coming year, we can make room for a quiet moment. The psalm reminds us that we are His flock, people He cares for. From within that closeness, He asks us to listen.
Sometimes our hearts grow hard because we have been hurt; sometimes because we know listening may change something. We can tell the LORD that too. We need not invent an answer or seek a special experience. Let us read slowly, return to the words, and ask: What do they show me about Him? What is already clear that I could do today? Listening can begin with a small, simple step.

Shepherd of Israel, thank You that we are not strangers to You. Soften my heart and help me recognize Your voice in Scripture and respond in my life.

The word is near you
Deuteronomy 30:11–14 describes the commandment as something within reach: “The word is very near you, in your mouth and in your heart, to do it.” That nearness still leaves room to learn and ask questions. It gives us courage to begin living what we have already heard. When a thought comes in prayer, we can weigh it in light of Scripture and speak with someone trustworthy.
